Setting
Setting is the time and place the story is taking place in. In literature the setting can also influence caracters and what they do
There are the two settings in The Dead the Morkan's house, where the annual dinner and dance is held, the hotel where Gabriel and Gretta stay for the night. The Morkan's house is the setting where most of the story takes place in The Dead. It is where the setting and story goes and therefore the more important setting compared to the hotel.. While the hotel is a minor setting where only a small part of the story takes place in.
Influences of Setting
The setting of the hotel causes Gabriel to come up with his epiphany, as after he hears the story that Gretta tells him, the snow outside the window helps him envison Gretta's story. By describing the setting James Joyces helps us envision things and is able to help us understand the theme of his story The Dead
The holiday mood invoked at the Morkan's House also allows the characters in The Dead to have having time to think about the less important things like when Gretta starts thinking of her old lover while the music is on. The setting of the house allows the reader to understand irish culture as it gives us an understanding to the background of the family through descriptions of the setting.
